Short history: Starting as a resort in the 1860s and 1870s, Coney Island soon became an escape from the summer heat for   millions of New Yorkers in the early 20th century. Amusement parks came and went through the years, some failing financially while others were destroyed by fire, but at its peak, during the 1920s, there were 3 major parks vying for   the hearts of city dwellers: Luna Park, Dreamland and Steeplechase Park. Still standing today, the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone were opened in 1920 and 1927, respectively,   and helped solidify Coney Island's success. While only several parks currently remain in the space, including Astroland,   the Coney Island we have known is in the middle of a transition period, and development has begun to   convert it into a six acre park by 2011.
