Short history of the Union Jack: In 1606, a new flag was created to symbolize England and Scotland's regal union. Incorporating the Flag of England (a red cross with a white background) and the Flag of Scotland (a white saltire, or X, with a blue background), this flag was used until 1801, when the 1800 Act of Union merged the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain. A red St. Patrick's Cross (symbolizing Northern Ireland) was added to the existing flag, creating the flag we recognize today.
